Washington, DC—The Task Force on American Innovation, a coalition of businesses, trade groups, scientific and engineering societies, and university organizations which supports federally-funded scientific research, today issued the following statement on as Congress passed FY 24 legislation that reduced funding for several key investments in science and innovation:

“While we are pleased that Congress has reached an agreement for FY 24, we are disappointed to see that this funding package includes so many reductions in key science and innovation accounts. For example, the funding for the National Science Foundation, NSF, —which is crucial to research and workforce training—is being reduced by 5% or $500 million. National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST, will experience a 10% cut, or nearly $200 million. Meanwhile, China is increasing its funding for science and research by 10%.  China is serious about becoming the global leader on innovation. The FY 24 funding in the US shows we still have work to do.”
